Warm/Cool Mosaic Art
Students learn about warm and cool colours with this art project. They also study the element of SPACE - negative space and positive space.
Georgia O'Keefe flowers
We study Georgia O'Keefe's art and discuss what elements of her art that we like. We noticed that she painted a lot of pictures of flowers and we created our own version.
Van Gogh "Starry Night" variation
We learn about Vincent Van Gogh's early life through videos and we look at many of the paintings he created that made him famous. In particular we study "Starry Night" and attempt to recreate that painted using oil pastels and watercolor paint.
We then create our own variations of this painting, again using oil pastels and paint.
Edible Colour Wheel
The students experimented with mixing primary colours and secondary colours to create their own personal colour wheels. We used white icing tinted with yellow, blue, and red food colouring. Students mixed the colours together and iced cookies to create their colour wheels. After I took pictures, the students were allowed to eat their colour wheels, along with glasses of milk to wash all the cookies down. The students had a blast with this assignment!
Graffiti Names and Self Portraits
At the beginning of the year, students look at examples of graffiti art and discuss the elements that they find effective. Then, students are able to experiment with some of their favorite elements using their names (or nicknames).
Every year I get my students to draw a self-portrait of themselves. This year I tried something different. Students had to replace their facial characteristics with a "favourite" thing. This allowed me to get to know what the students liked and they had fun doing it!

Kandinsky inspired abstract art
We study abstract art created by Wassily Kandinsky and discuss what elements of his paintings we like and appeal to us.
We then use acrylic paint to create our own abstract art. We listen to classical music and let our feelings guide what colors we use and what brush strokes we make. Below are a few samples of the abstract art we have created.

After we create our abstract art, we cut up our papers into square 2cm pieces and refashion our abstract pieces to create new pieces of art. Try and match the original with the finished abstract!
Op Art
In the middle of winter, students study different optical illusions. As a class, we complete two different types of op art projects: "tornados" and "unicorn horns". Students are then able to research other op art styles or create their own. Students illustrate their favorite op art styles on 3D cube nets.
Emily Carr
Another famous artist we learn about is Emily Carr. She lived in BC for most of her life and we discover that she love nature, especially trees and totem poles. We spend a lot of time looking at her art work and discussing what we like, and don't like, about some of her paintings. We learn how to draw interesting looking trees. During this assignment we experiment with different watercolour techniques and we work on our own watercolour paintings.
