Science
Diversity of Living Things
In our first unit the year, we study animal classification in our unit called Diversity of Living Things. A favourite assignment is our research project on an arthropod. It is neat to learn about all the different little creatures in nature.
Understanding Electricity
The second unit in science is all about electricity. We start off by talking about static electricity and how it works. We do many experiments to illustrate when static electricity is present. We then move onto current electricity and the students make simple circuits. Students then learn about the difference between series and parallel circuits and build examples of each.
Students then move onto on a research project about renewable and non-renewable energy generation options. They work in groups and present their research to their classmates in the form of a PowerPoint presentation.
As a culmination activity, students participate in a simulation situation about a fictitious town, Sunshine City, that is running out of energy. Each student is given a particular role to play in our simulation. Students prepare their roles for our class debate about which energy source is the best solution for Sunshine City.
